Three British meat suppliers and a London produce wholesaler were caught up in the latest attacks on internet-connected refrigeration controls. The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers said the affected units at its members’ businesses were empty and no meat was lost. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the UK’s cybersecurity agency, said it had contacted businesses with exposed, vulnerable systems; no British grocery chain was directly affected [therecord.media][bbc.co.uk][theguardian.com]. The attacks remotely altered refrigeration settings at food businesses and supermarkets in at least 10 European countries on Nov. 2, following a similar wave in France in October. The affected UK meat suppliers used Copeland XWEB controllers, while the London produce wholesaler said it stopped the attack by disconnecting equipment from the internet [bbc.com][therecord.media][theguardian.com]. A firmware update for the affected Copeland controllers had been available since August, but how the attackers gained access and who was responsible remain unconfirmed. Cybersecurity researchers recorded attempts to access decoy refrigeration controls and found infrastructure overlaps with operations previously associated with Russian-linked actors, but said they could not identify a group. Officials said the attacks did not require artificial intelligence [therecord.media][theguardian.com][techxplore.com]. Highlights: • Online exposure: Censys counted 138 exposed StoreView management interfaces in Belgium, 51 in the Netherlands and 50 in Sweden; 68%, 37% and 58%, respectively, appeared patched [securityweek.com]. • Probe activity: Lupovis said most authentication attempts used manufacturer-documented default credentials; its decoy sensors rejected all attempts [theguardian.com][securityweek.com]. • AI distinction: The NCSC’s Ollie Whitehouse said AI could help attackers find vulnerabilities in internet-connected controllers faster and reverse-engineer operational technology software [computerweekly.com]. Perspectives: UK National Cyber Security Centre: Chief executive Richard Horne said the freezer incidents were “just the foothills” of a larger cyber threat [therecord.media][computerweekly.com]. (Computer Weekly) Association of Independent Meat Suppliers: Spokesperson Tony Goodger said affected members were caught up in the attacks because they used the same software as the targeted European supermarkets [therecord.media][bbc.co.uk]. (The Record) Secomea: Chief executive Michael Ferdinandsen argued that retailers need tighter control over who can remotely access operational equipment, which devices they can reach and what actions they can perform [retail-insight-network.com].
