Google says it will switch off Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search by default for K-12 student accounts as the changes roll out in early 2027. School administrators will be able to enable each service individually [techcrunch.com][nbcnews.com][9to5google.com]. After criticism that schools could not keep Search while rejecting Google’s AI, the company clarified that administrators can enable Search separately from its other Gemini products. The school version of Search will still include AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode [nbcnews.com][cbsnews.com]. The policy reverses Google’s August decision to make some Gemini features available by default in Classroom, which drew objections from educators and child-safety advocates [engadget.com][cnet.com]. Google says 150 million students and teachers worldwide use Classroom, and Chromebooks are common in US schools [cnet.com][techspot.com]. Google also made its Guided Learning tool available globally in Classroom on Nov. 3 and plans to test it in Search at selected US schools later in November [9to5google.com][ppc.land]. The feature is designed to guide students through homework problems rather than supply direct answers. Google says it will share more implementation details with schools in the coming months [techcrunch.com][gizmodo.com]. Highlights: • Research concerns: Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute concluded in July that Google Search’s AI Overview and AI Mode were not safe for children and teenagers; Google disputed the assessment [mashable.com]. • Study mode: Teachers can assign Guided Learning activities based on class material and receive information on how students are handling them [9to5google.com][androidheadlines.com]. Perspectives: Google: The company says the revised controls respond to requests from schools for more say over student AI access, and argues its announcements give schools more choice because they can enable services separately [nbcnews.com][androidauthority.com].
