SpaceX has selected Qualcomm to supply equipment and software for Starlink Mobile’s planned U.S. terrestrial 5G network. Deployment is expected to start in 2027 and expand to tens of thousands of sites over several years [pcmag.com][theverge.com][datacenterdynamics.com]. The ground network is intended to work alongside Starlink satellites as SpaceX seeks to compete with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile [firstpost.com][satellitetoday.com]. Qualcomm will provide its Dragonwing QRU100 radio and QDU100 processing platforms, along with Layer 1 software. The base stations will use 64-transmit, 64-receive Massive MIMO radios [pcmag.com][neowin.net]. Qualcomm says the design can improve capacity and spectrum efficiency. SpaceX will build the base stations and handle higher network layers, according to Qualcomm executive Durga Malladi [techaeris.com]. Analysts say securing enough tower locations and spectrum to match established carriers, along with the cost of a nationwide network, remain significant hurdles for SpaceX [techradar.com][pcmag.com]. The companies have not disclosed financial terms. The announced 2027 date marks the planned start of network deployment, not a confirmed consumer-service launch [androidauthority.com][iphone-ticker.de]. Highlights: • Spectrum gap: SpaceX’s existing spectrum holdings total less than 80 MHz, compared with 300–400 MHz for each national incumbent, according to PCMag [pcmag.com]. • Tower footprint: PCMag reported that SpaceX was said to be pursuing as many as 80,000 cell towers, near the number used by major carriers, though those carriers also operate tens of thousands of small-cell sites [pcmag.com]. • Service performance: Ookla analyst Mike Dano cited tests in which one in seven Starlink direct-to-device texts failed, versus about one in 50 on terrestrial networks [techradar.com]. • Qualcomm expansion: Qualcomm described the contract as its largest 5G network deal, extending its infrastructure business beyond its better-known phone chips and modems [pcmag.com][cnyes.com]. Perspectives: Peter Adderton, CEO of MobileX and founder of Boost Mobile: Adderton argued that SpaceX’s goal may go beyond winning wireless customers, suggesting it could seek to weaken incumbent carriers’ economics and eventually acquire one [techradar.com]. (TechRadar) T-Mobile: Chief Executive Srini Gopalan said the company evaluates partnerships by whether they add distribution or reach new markets, and did not see a SpaceX mobile virtual network operator deal meeting that test [androidcentral.com]. (Android Central) Qualcomm: Executive Durga Malladi said Qualcomm’s equipment is designed to deliver high performance with lower power use at each site and described the work as a possible foundation for AI-native 6G [datacenterdynamics.com].
