Apple has opened its next-generation Siri to third-party developers in beta and started a separate Apple Intelligence trial in mainland China that does not include the new Siri experience [apple.com][technode.com][macobserver.com]. The developer preview, available with beta software for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro, lets apps make selected content and actions available to Siri through Apple’s App Intents framework. Developers can also define “skills” that combine multiple actions in one request [apple.com]. In China, the initial developer test includes writing assistance, translation, photo cleanup and Genmoji, with Alibaba’s Qwen model integrated into Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence for some requests [technode.com][macobserver.com]. The newer cross-app Siri AI is excluded from that rollout, which is being adapted to China’s regulatory requirements [tribune.com.pk][techxplore.com]. Apple says developers can test integrations now but cannot submit apps using them to the App Store until spring. The company expects the first integrated experiences to reach customers in a few months [apple.com]. Apple has said public access to Apple Intelligence in China is due in December 2026 [macobserver.com][tribune.com.pk]. Highlights: • China eligibility: The initial China beta supports iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and newer models, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo; iPad and Mac versions are still awaiting additional regulatory approvals [macobserver.com]. • Developer testing: Developers can test builds through Xcode or internal TestFlight, but external testing is not yet open [macworld.com]. • Mac activities: The macOS 27.3 beta brings native Live Activities to Apple silicon Macs through the menu bar, including Music, Clock, Voice Memos and screen recording, with third-party developers also able to add support [macrumors.com][appleinsider.com]. • Watch listening: On Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, Live Rewind can show a transcript of the previous 15 seconds and Siri Recap can summarize conversation topics; Apple says audio is processed on-device and not saved [iphoneincanada.ca]. Perspectives: Ivan Lam, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, said the China launch fills a longstanding gap in Apple’s AI offering but does not necessarily give the company a significant advantage in a crowded market [tribune.com.pk]. (The Express Tribune) Zhang Yi, founder of the research firm iiMedia, described Apple’s reliance on local partners for China’s AI services as a structural concession that limits Apple’s control over pricing and the user experience there [tribune.com.pk]. (The Express Tribune) Zhong Xiaolei, a senior analyst at Omdia, said Chinese phone makers and internet companies are building their own AI features and agent ecosystems, intensifying competition for Apple [techxplore.com].
