Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff won a second six-year term representing Georgia, defeating Republican Rep. Mike Collins, whom President Donald Trump endorsed. The Associated Press called the race less than an hour after polls closed. Ossoff was the only Democratic senator seeking reelection in a state Trump carried in 2024, and Republicans had viewed the seat as a pickup opportunity [georgiarecorder.com][kare11.com][laist.com]. Ossoff campaigned on affordability and health care, sharply criticizing Trump’s policies and portraying Collins as tied to the president. Collins promoted tax cuts, immigration enforcement and deregulation, and accused Ossoff of being too liberal. His campaign also faced scrutiny over a House ethics investigation and white nationalist and antisemitic material shared by his son-in-law and a former staffer [koaa.com][georgiarecorder.com][kare11.com]. Ossoff’s win keeps the Georgia seat in Democratic hands as the parties contest control of the Senate. His campaign raised more than $100 million. His victory renewed speculation about a 2028 presidential bid, but he has said he intends to serve his full Senate term and has no interest in running for president [kare11.com][theatlantic.com]. Highlights: • Campaign strategy: Ossoff held carefully produced rallies, while aides quickly edited clips of his critiques and distributed them online [kare11.com]. • Policy contrasts: Ossoff called for ending the Iran war and criticized Trump’s tariffs; he also said he valued Israel’s security and the lives of innocent Palestinians, while leaving the question of genocide to the International Criminal Court [kare11.com]. • Senate record: Ossoff has promoted a proposal to prohibit members of Congress from trading individual stocks and a constitutional amendment to limit corporate campaign spending; both remained proposals during the campaign [kare11.com]. • Voter views: About two-thirds of Georgia voters surveyed by the AP Voter Poll said Ossoff was not too extreme, including most independents and about three in 10 Republicans [newsday.com]. Perspectives: Rep. Mike Collins: Collins argued that Ossoff’s voting record was too liberal for Georgia and accused him of supporting open borders and allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports [kare11.com]. (KARE 11) Republican officials supporting Ossoff: Former Sen. Jeff Flake and Republican mayors supported Ossoff, pointing to his constituent work, including efforts to secure hurricane relief and federal investment for Georgia [georgiarecorder.com][thecurrentga.org]. (Georgia Recorder) Rep. Mike Collins: After the loss, Collins said serving under President Trump had been an honor and told supporters he would continue serving in whatever role was available to him [georgiarecorder.com].
