Democratic physician Amy Acton defeated Republican biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio’s Nov. 3 governor’s race, according to projections by The Associated Press and NBC. Acton will be Ohio’s first elected woman governor and the first Democrat to win the office since 2006 [wkyc.com][time.com][news18.com]. Ramaswamy’s campaign ran an advertisement featuring Acton’s estranged mother, who called her a liar. The ad did not mention that Acton’s stepfather had been indicted for sexually abusing her as a child. Republican Gov. Mike DeWine called the ad “deeply, deeply troubling,” while President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance defended Ramaswamy [cbsnews.com][wkyc.com][aljazeera.com]. Acton campaigned on lowering costs and improving access to health care; Ramaswamy promoted tax cuts and lower utility bills. Highlights: • Campaign spending: Spending in the race topped $100 million. Elon Musk contributed at least $5 million to a political action committee supporting Ramaswamy, who reportedly put about $36 million of his own money into his campaign [wkyc.com][news18.com]. • Policy divide: Acton proposed a child tax credit, more state support for public schools and conditions on new data centers; Ramaswamy campaigned on phasing out Ohio’s income tax and reducing property taxes [daytondailynews.com][wkyc.com]. • Legislative hurdle: Acton will face a Republican-controlled state legislature as she seeks changes to the state’s universal school-voucher program [daytondailynews.com]. • Debate dispute: Acton declined to debate Ramaswamy, and his campaign and Ohio Republicans repeatedly criticized her refusal [dailysignal.com][news18.com]. • Experience gap: Acton enters the governor’s office without prior experience in elected office; the race was Ramaswamy’s first bid for elected office after his unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign [wesh.com][news18.com]. Perspectives: Mike DeWine, Ohio governor: Despite urging Ramaswamy’s campaign to withdraw the ad, DeWine maintained his endorsement of the Republican candidate [time.com][wkyc.com].
