Texas state Rep. James Talarico, a Democrat, defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Nov. 3 Senate election, giving Democrats their first Texas Senate victory since 1988 and first statewide victory since 1994. Talarico will replace Republican Sen. John Cornyn when the new term begins in January 2027, giving Democrats a pickup in their effort to take control of the Senate [pbs.org][theguardian.com][texastribune.org]. Talarico, a former middle school teacher and Presbyterian seminarian, campaigned on lowering everyday costs and limiting wealthy donors’ influence, seeking support from independents and Republicans as well as Democrats. Paxton’s record was a central campaign issue: the Texas House impeached him in 2023 over allegations of corruption and abuse of power, but the state Senate acquitted him. A separate federal corruption investigation ended without charges [pbs.org][lemonde.fr][cbsnews.com]. The contest drew more than $500 million in advertising, including more than $200 million from billionaire Elon Musk to support Paxton, according to campaign spending estimates cited by The Guardian and The Texas Tribune. Democrat Gina Hinojosa also defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. Paxton conceded the Senate race. Talarico will take office in January, and Cornyn said he would help with the transition [theguardian.com][texastribune.org][texasstandard.org][thedailytexan.com].
